Karatekas impress in Africa Cup

The pupils were chosen from all ages and grades and had to impress in free fighting, kumite and kata.

“Producing champions is how I gauge myself,” is what Roodepoort Karate Centre’s Sensei Johan Roets said after his pupils qualified for Africa’s first JKA/WF Africa Cup.

Xander Theunissen, Jordan and Ethan van der Merwe, Themba Gama, Aiden Lindeque and Ruan Cronje won the right to participate in the continent’s exclusive competition and be part of the South African JKA Karate team when they were selected at the recent South African Championships.

At the competitions, the young boys along with the rest of the club returned 38 medals.

All African countries south of the equator will be participating and sensei Roets, who is the SA Japan Karate Association president said the competition, which will be held at Ellis Park Arena in September will have instructors from Japan as guests.

Sensei Roets said his club receives positive feedback from schools because of the discipline, self esteem and confidence which their pupils exude when they are part of the club.

“A lot of women are part of the club as well as father and son pairings. As karate is a family friendly sport, this is a great way to spend some time with the children while learning a fun sport,” he said.
