Update: EFF to get involved in Roodepoort Primary drama

Pupils said the 'new' school is okay.

There was peace and calm at Roodepoort Primary this afternoon following this morning’s incident when police opened fire at the crowd outside the school who tried to block buses who had to take pupils to their temporary school.

A heavy contingent of Roodepoort Police officers, the Tactical Response Team, the Public Order Policing unit as well as JMPD were present to make sure the the children were dropped off under peaceful circumstances. The buses were escorted in by the police and the pupils were dropped off about 500m from the small crowd at the school.

It was comforting that all the children the Record spoke to said they “like their new school” (Lufhereng Primary) and “it was not so bad”. One young man added “as long as I can get an education.”

The crowd cheered as representatives from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) arrived at about 3pm to gather information about the situation.

“We will be here at 7am tomorrow morning to protest in solidarity with this community,” the EFF’s provincial secretary Malesela Ledwaba told the Record.
