Community responds to Oscar’s release

The Record received mixed responses from the community about Pistorius' release.

Residents have expressed their feelings about Oscar Pistorius’ release which is due on Friday and even though some are opposed to the idea, other residents support it..

An online article states although Pistorius will be free from prison, he will only be allowed to leave the house to attend church and he is expected to wear an electronic tag on his ankle at all times. It added Oscar has been studying the Bible while he was in prison.

He was found guilty of culpable homicide and was given a sentence of five years. He only served 10 months at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.

Another article states Pistorius will be living in a Mansion in Pretoria with his uncle.

Oscar Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide last year after he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp dead through a bathroom door.

Angelique Collopen from Florida says she feels sorry for Pistorius and thinks he should be given a chance to re-build his life.

“Pistorius should be released because everyone deserves a second chance and he has already been punished enough. His career has also been damaged and nothing will be the same again,” she said.

Another resident, Eric Mthembu is opposed to Oscar’s release and feels he has not learned his lesson yet.

Mthembu said, “I feel Pistorius should have served his time like everyone else who has committed a murder. This makes me feel like being rich and famous in South Africa makes you super human and above the law.”

A Davidsonville resident who asked to be anonymous seconds what Eric said by saying Pistorius lied throughout his trial.

“He should be in prison for life. This sentence was way too short,” she said.

Although some responses the Record received were negative, a Helderkruin resident is completely neutral about the situation.

“I don’t think it will make any difference because Pistorius will still be prohibited from certain activities,” he said.
