Report illegal connections (the Record did)

Follow our example and proactively report illegal connections to the City of Johannesburg via these numbers and email addresses.

Did you know the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has created a way for residents to report illegal connections?
A special hotline exists to report things like illegal water or power connections, false contact and personal information, failure to create accounts for new occupants and bribing CoJ officials. Other matters can also be reported.

The Record has been inundated with phone calls and emails recently regarding illegal connections at Princess informal settlement, among other service delivery failures that seem to go under the radar. Ward councillors are experiencing the same volume of reports, but residents can do more to ensure utilities which they spend their hard-earned money on is not rigged by dishonest citizens.

According to CoJ’s website, “Reporting fraud is everyone’s responsibility as fraudulent behaviour affects us all through increased bills and dangerous electrical connections.”

CoJ, on the website, promised that all allegations are thoroughly investigated and where it is warranted, followed up with the full force of the law.

“All calls are treated in the strictest confidence and the callers may remain anonymous.”
If you suspect or are aware of fraud or corruption within the city, call the Anti-Fraud Hotline on 0800 002 587.

Record reports illegal connections in Princess
The Record tested the above number and got through to a very helpful operator by name Thendo. The illegal connection issue in Princess near the Princess informal settlement was subsequently reported.

An automated voice prompt said fraud tip-offs can also be shared with the hotline via SMS to 32840 (at a cost of R1 per SMS) and via email at anticorruption@tipoffs.com .

The Record was offered anonymity, partial anonymity (giving a name and contact information that is not shared beyond the call centre) and full disclosure and chose the latter.

We received a reference number 2243 2015 0812 1331 05. Thendo said the report they compiled with the Record will leave the call centre within 24 hours for investigation and feedback will be given within six to eight weeks.

The whole call lasted eight minutes and 10 seconds.
