Witpoortjie Viking to host boxing tournament

The Witpoortjie Vikings Amateur Boxing Club will be hosting a tournament later this month.

Boxers from the Gauteng province have been invited to participate and fans will be treated to more than 30 bouts on the day.

The club’s head coach Phillip du Randt said the tournament is to give his boxers experience in the ring and increase the visibility of the sport in the community.

“This tournament will be the first that’s held in Witpoortjie. We have always wanted to host one but never had the resources before. The more a boxer gains experience in the ring, the better they become. I had 171 amateur fights during my career but most boxers these days only participate in less than 15 of them before they turn professional,” he said.

The tournament will feature fighters from nine to 29-years-old and female boxers will also be holding an auction to raise funds for the club.

The tournament will take place on 22 August at the Witpoortjie Recreational Centre at 1pm and entrance is free of charge.
