CPF forced to escourt cigarette truck out of Witpoortjie

Suspects speed of up Trezona.

It is believed four suspects in a red Alfa Julietta were planning to hijack a British American Tobacco (Bat) truck at about 9am in Witpoortjie this morning.

According to the manager of the Engen Service Station on the corner of Generaal Pienaar Avenue and Ham Street, the cigarette truck arrived and the driver and his assistant informed him they were being followed. He looked on the CCTV cameras and saw the vehicle in question stopping in Ham Street. A short while later they drove around the block and could be seen slowly passing the service station again. When they drove around the block a second time the manager went out and when the suspects realised he saw them they sped off and disappeared up Trezona Avenue.

The West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) was contacted who for safety reasons proceeded to escort the truck out of Witpoortjie.

This comes in the wake of a spate of cigarette truck hijackings across Johannesburg leading to police having to accompany the trucks.
