School starts term on bad note – again

315 Children absent.

In one more episode of the Roodepoort Primary saga that has been dragging on since last year September, extreme measures had once again been taken on the first day of the new term.

Armed security had to be deployed on Monday at the school after confrontational community members tried to disrupt teaching.

According to Gauteng Education Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) Panyaza Lesufi, 949 pupils showed up for school while there were 315 absentees.

Lesufi twice threatened to close the school in the past six months and one protest got heated to the extent that riot police had to fire rubber bullets. The majority coloured community’s main grievance is the appointment of a black principal over a coloured one.
