A councilor’s earlier allegations that City Power employees are scared of informal settlers were confirmed by spokesperson Sol Masolo in writing to the Record.

Commenting on the recent case of an NPO located in Princess informal settlement that was without power for 12 days due to electricity theft, Masolo said “we have some community members who fight with our electricians”.

At the end of June Ward 85 councilor Carl Mann made the allegation saying himself and Ward 71 councilor Gert Niemand receive constant complaints and have reported it on numerous occasions, only to hear city employees are afraid of the residents.

“In the past we have even asked Metro Police to assist us in entering the area to remove some illegal connections so as to protect our employees,” Masolo said.

“City Power has continued to remove illegal connections in the area.

“We will continue doing so, although on many occasions we do it at the risk of the lives of our employees.”
