Help a soup kitchen for Mandela Day

Helping the charity will only take 67 minutes of your time.

Fred and Martie’s soup kitchen, a non-profit organisation who has been feeding children for the past 35 years, is in need of the community’s help for Mandela Day.

Not only does the soup kitchen feed children every day, it provides food parcels for the needy as well as free sewing classes to those in the community.

“My dad, who was the founder of the soup kitchen, wanted to eradicate poverty in the area and today my main goal is to show children that there is a future for them,” said the current owner, Yolindi Oberholzer.

In order to upgrade their facilities, the soup kitchen needs volunteers and people to donate to celebrate Mandela Day with them.

Their organic vegetable garden is used to feed about 500 children every day.

They plan on providing the children with vegetable garden tyres to take home. However, donations are needed for this to happen, which includes:

• Winter vegetable seedlings

• Bags of soil mix

• Used motor tyres

• Fertiliser to boost the growth of vegetables

The non-profit organisation plans to build a sand-pit for the young children as it contributes to their eye and hand coordination. They also want to upgrade their flower beds, and provide gazebos for the children to sit comfortably under while doing their homework, and to make this happen, they will need:

• Corregating sheets

• Screws

• A crushed mixture of cement and stones

• Gazebos

• Bags of cement

• Enamel paint

• Garden shrubs

• Weed killers

• Different types of flowers and plants

• Plaster sand

Those who wish to donate and assist with the vegetable garden tyres for Mandela Day may call Yolandi on 082-854-6904 or her husband Riaan on 082-786-8517.
