Councillors unite for Tshepang

Councillors brave the cold weather to fix a jungle gym.

Councillors Carl Mann and Gert Niemand along with the Northpoint City Church braved the cold weather on Saturday to fix the jungle gym at Tshepang Programme for Orphaned and vulnerable children.

The jungle gym which is used by the children of the programme was declared unusable by a health inspector due to its dilapidated state.

Niemand had done maintenance on the jungle gym two years ago.

The day was also in celebration of Youth month and the upcoming Mandela Day.

The Northpoint City Church prepared 250 hotdogs and party packs for the children to enjoy.

“This is not a political event but a day for the children. I approached the church about helping to fix the jungle gym and they were more than happy to help. This is our way of giving back to the community,” said Mann.

Niemand, who has been involved with the crèche before said fixing the jungle gym would make the children happy as they needed a place to play and have fun.

“Although it may be small, this is a token of support to the children which will create a lasting memory. The crèche does enormous good for the children and we will be back here again to fix it,” said Niemand.

Thato Mrewa was the coordinator of the event and prepared a day of performances and fun activities for the children to honour 16 June.

“As part of our youth programme, we want to honour those who gave their lives for the struggle and celebrate their lives in a peaceful manner. Most of the youth see this month as an opportunity to drink and party so we want to show them a different way,” she said.
