Witpoortjie church on fire
Church burns to the ground in the early hours of the morning.
Nobody was hurt when the house on the corner of Corlett Avenue and Albertina Sisulu Road was ablaze this morning.
The house, which is used as a church was abandoned and the electricity was allegedly off for the last two weeks.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 3am after being contacted by police.
It is unclear what caused the fire but John Marimiria, who lives in the plot next to the church was first on scene.
“We just saw a light outside and we went to investigate as to what it was. We noticed that the fire started from one corner of the house and spread. The fire was moving very fast, our suspicions are the fire was fuelled by a lubricant,” he said.
John tried to enter the church to investigate if there was anything to salvage.
“There are dishes and other utensils inside the church that we tried to save but were not successful. The fire was moving at a rapid pace from top to bottom,” said John.
The police arrived on scene and contacted the firefighters who then fought the blaze.
John was out of the country for two months. On his return, noticed the church and his house had been burgled. Clothing and blankets had been stolen from his home.
“We have been here for almost six years and there were no problems. But we heard the congregants of the church who didn’t.
