Community takes fight to the MEC

MEC for Education postpones meeting with community.

The Davidsonville community has had enough in the ongoing saga over the appointment of the Roodepoort Primary’s principal and two deputy principals, was the strong message from community leader Theo van Rensburg this morning.

A large part of the mainly coloured community has been fighting the appointments of the black principals since late last year claiming the process was flawed and alleging it was racist. On two previous occasions where the community protested over the issue the public order policing (Pop) unit had to keep the situation under control.

At the last meeting between the community and the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, he promised the community that he would report back the findings of a thorough audit today. Lesufi reneged on his commitment though and sent a message saying he could only meet with the outraged community tomorrow at 2pm.

“He is playing games with us and has tested our patience beyond acceptable limits,” said Van Rensburg when he addressed the angry crowd outside the school.

He vowed that if the MEC did not let the community know by 11am this morning whether he will come and report to them, that they would go to his office and confront him there. He also indicated that the community is not interested in dealing with Lesufi anymore and they would now insist on dealing with the minister of Education, Angie Motshekga directly.

Just past 11am a hundred odd community members left Davidsonville for the MEC’s office in five taxis, cars and by train.

By the time of publishing the outcome of the meeting with Lesufi was not known yet.
