Cigarette leads to explosion in car

A woman's need for nicotine nearly turned fatal when lighting a cigarette caused an explosion in her vehicle.

On Wednesday night 7 January the woman, believed to be in her fifties, got into her vehicle in Azalea Street and habitually lit her cigarette. Little did she know that the gas bottle she kept near the backseat of her vehicle was leaking. According to witnesses the explosion was so loud that neighbours believed it to be a gunshot that was fired off. Fortunately the explosion only occurred inside the vehicle and did not set the vehicle itself alight.

According to paramedics on scene, she sustained third degree burns to the whole of her left arm, her left shoulder, the back of her neck and her back.

ER 24 paramedics rushed her to Leratong Hospital after she was stabilised.

Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch could not be reached for further commentary.
