Laerskool Helderkruin is one of the cleanest schools in Roodepoort.
This was confirmed when they were announced one of the winners of the 2013 Pikitup Eco-Rangers Competition on Friday. The 2014 leg of the competition commences in July.
The Eco Rangers project that targets Grade 3 and 4 pupils has been launched successfully at 200 earmarked schools within the City of Joburg municipality. These schools in peri-urban and urban areas include township and town schools, Pikitup spokesperson Pansy Oyedele says.
She adds that the ultimate objective of the project is to integrate the Eco Rangers fully into the school’s programme.
“It is a great competition and initiative for our pupils to be part of,” says acting Helderkruin principal Riaan van der Watt. “The whole aim is to create awareness among the children to keep the environment clean and like Pikitup say: ‘Reduce, re-use, recycle, rethink.’ Recycling plays a huge role in our society and we want to contribute.
“We thank Pikitup and organisers for this great initiative and we are looking forward to taking hands with them in future.”
Proceedings got under way with Pikitup Eco-Ranger character Recyclo teaching the pupils the Reduce, re-use, recycle, rethink song and dance. This was followed by the prize-giving ceremony to award the winners of the Pitch In and Pikitup Eco Rangers competition. Three pupils as well as two educators were rewarded for their efforts while the school received a cheque of R5 000.
