17 tired but happy scooter riders from the Chicken Runners group returned to Roodepoort from Cape Agulhas on 7 May.

The group that consisted of mostly new and vintage Vespas started out with 23 riders and two backup vehicles but some of the men unfortunately had to return home earlier owing to other obligations.

The tour saw the Chicken Runners travelling through cities and towns such as Bloemfontein, Middelburg, De Rust, Robertson, Oudshoorn, Mosselbay, Robertson, Struisbaai, Hopetown, Hoopstad, Victoria West and of course their goal, Cape Agulhas, which is the furthest point south of the African continent.

Although there were a few breakdowns, which the team mechanics and Vespa experts Jannie and Gerrie Alberts could repair, no one was injured.

The group, who took to the road to raise money for baby Marco Steyn who suffers from Krabbes disease, raised a total of R50 000 to help his parents cover some of his medical costs.

In total the men travelled over 3 400km.

One of the riders, James Burnett, summed up the tour as follows: “We started out as 23 friends but ended up as 23 brothers”. Another rider Gerhard Botha jokingly said that “it was not a 12-day scooter tour but a 12-day survival course”.
