From factional fighting to dagga plants – a day in the life of a pensioner

Old age home says High Court is next step.

The Record recently has carried various reports on government old age homes and their challenges, and it seems that the source of the problem for all of them is the same – the Department of Housing.

The steering committee of Donovan McDonald Old Age Home that was elected under the watchful eye of the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) spoke to the Record about the ongoing problems at this facility and the lack of support by the Department of Housing.

Among the problems they face are illegal occupation, leaking pipes, broken windows, financial irregularities, dagga being grown on the premises and lifts that do not work.

The committee now has obtained the services of two lawyers who will be helping them pro bono and on 19 February the committee will take their grievances to the Director General and the Minister of Social Development in Pretoria.

The next step, they say, will be to take their case to the High Court.
