Meeting the stern but caring Khumalo

Roodepoort welcomes Nonhlanhla Khumalo, the new spokesperson for the Roodepoort Police.

Learning that Nonhlanhla Khumalo (51), new Roodepoort police spokesperson, describes herself as “shy” at first was confusing to journalist Mathilde Myburgh.

“I’m here to serve my community, not to make noise,” said the Roodepoort West resident in a meeting at the Roodepoort Police Station on Tuesday 21 January.

Khumalo has been with the police for 28 years – since she was 22 years old – and describes it as her “one and only” job.

“I’ve moved between departments, doing administration or supervising, but here I feel I am serving my community best,” says a delighted Khumalo, who recently was transferred from Protea Glen Police Station.

“Being closer to home gives me new perspective, but crime is nothing new. I thought that in my own peaceful neighbourhood it would be different to crime in Soweto, but it’s not, not in the least.”

Khumalo is a “happily single” mother of one daughter and a grandmother to two granddaughters (aged seven and three) and her worst fear for her female family is the dark abyss of rape.

“An ignorant community is one where crime and violence are rife, and it is my duty and privilege to inform every resident of what to look out for and give them tips for a safer neighbourhood.”

However, warns Khumalo, “Residents have to perform their duty, in return, to keep updated on the events by reading their newspapers and notices and getting involved”.

Khumalo emphasises, “Join and befriend your neighbourhood watch, be aware of the community policing forums, get the youth involved in youth crime prevention and most importantly, know your sector police contact details – it is vital.”

The spokesperson hopes that residents “will keep a positive outlook and take police information seriously”.

Khumalo was inspired by a colonel she had worked with, learning from her the importance of tolerance, acceptance and respect.

“In my experience, most women today are the head of their households, and we are a force to be reckoned with – thus we should start taking action.”
