Police send out urgent smash and grab warning

"We are experiencing a series of incidents" – Florida SAPS.

The Florida South African Police Service (SAPS) caution the public as there is an increase in smash-and-grab incidents.

Captain Lydia Dikolomela says, “The Florida police are experiencing a series of such criminal activity in certain identified areas.

“Most of the reported incidents took place on 14th Avenue at the on-ramp under the bridge, and at Gordon Road on the bridge between 6am and 7am and from 5pm to 7pm.

“Incidents usually take place when the drivers stop at the red traffic lights.

“In some of the incidents cellphones were snatched while the driver was busy on the phone and the robbers smashed the window.”

The public can curb these smash-and-grab incidents by following these tips:

• Refrain from putting valuables and other items such as cellphones, laptops and hand bags on the car seat.

• Put valuables out of sight – under the car seat or in the boot of the car.

• Be alert and vigilant at all times while driving and at the traffic lights and stop streets.

• Report any suspicious-looking movement to the police.

• Remember, smash-and-grab robberies can occur anywhere at any time.
