Charles Vining from Seeff Sandton says while being able to search for property remotely has many benefits, there  are also important things to keep in mind before opting to go that route. He advises buyers to be alert and consider the following.

  1. Pictures can give you the details you need for the property you’re interested in, however, Vining says this is not ample as they can be extensively reworked or improved to create a deceptive picture of the property. Videos give you a real reflection of space and can’t be easily manipulated.
  2. While you’re likely to begin your property journey as a “remote buyer” it is crucial that you visit the property in person at some stage or send someone who can view it on your behalf whom you trust completely.
  3. Vining advises that you use broad parameters when you browse property online. This can be the area you would like to buy in. “Start with your key suburb and then use Google maps to understand the surrounding suburbs. You never know what sort of property at what sort of price is available in the suburbs immediately neighbouring the suburb that you are interested in. You could surprise yourself with some additional, good options,” he says.

Before going to view a property with an agent, you should verify the agent and/or the agency they work for. One way you could do this is by calling the office number to make sure that the agent is employed there.
