SECUNDA – Secunda Hawks arrested five people for possession of a rhino horn on the R541 road recently.

This came after they received information that people were selling a rhino horn.

One of the Hawks members acted as a buyer in order to confirm the information.

He met with the suspects who showed him a rhino horn whereupon he signalled for the team to arrest them.

Mr Dunisani Magagula (41), Ms Sibongile Semelane (34), Ms Joyce Ntombi Nkosi (26), Ms Sonto Catherine Nkosi (42) and Mr Moses Piet Mabuza (36) appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court and were granted R2 000 bail each.

Upon investigation, the Hawks discovered that on the day of the incident, a policeman, Const Ndondo Amos Phakati from Elukwatini CIS, was making arrangements with the buyers after the deal was set.

He notified the suspects about the meeting place in Badplaas.

The constable was using a state vehicle to transport the rhino horn valued at R60 000, and the suspects.

Secunda Hawks and Furniture and Assets Forfeiture Unit from Middelburg arrested the constable who appeared in the Badplaas Magistrate’s Court.

He got R100 bail.

He will reappear in court on 28 July.
