Fireworks banned in London under new law

New laws recently passed in London ban under-18s from having fireworks in a public place.

New laws recently passed  in London ban under-18s from having fireworks in a public place.

The measures under the Firework Act 2003 also bar any member of the public from possessing high-powered “category four” fireworks of the kind used in professional displays.

The law comes into effect just days ahead of New Year’s Eve, for which fireworks become an increasingly popular part of festivities since the major displays of Millennium Eve.

The clampdown is intended to tackle the problem of anti-social behaviour involving fireworks.

These regulations are the first in a number of measures of our fireworks legislation which will help curb irresponsible behaviour with the handling of firework in public.

Further provisions of the legislation are due to come into force next year, including curfews on the setting off of fireworks, recognised training for display operators and the introduction of a licensing system for suppliers.

The new regulations will be enforced by the police.
