Editor’s Desk

Which teams do you think will go through to the final?

The stage is set for the biggest drama of the year, the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

I absolutely love the beautiful (or as they say in Brazil o jogo bonito) game of soccer, though I still do not understand when a players is off-side!

It is the adrenaline, the biting of nails, the raw nerves, the escape from everyday life for 90 minutes, the “togetherness” – the being connected to the global community, the strategies…

Pele once said: “I am constantly being asked about individuals. The only way to win is as a team. Football is not about one or two or three star players.”

Of course what he said is true, but we can’t deny the fact that some of the players are a feast for the (a woman’s) eye.

My favourites are (not necessarily in order): David Villa (Spain), Nacer Chadli (Belgium), Alex Song (Cameroon), Antonio Valencia (Ecuador), Nani (Portugal), Luis Suarez (Uruguay), Robin van Persie (Netherlands), Cesc Fabregas (Spain), Fernando Torres (Spain) and last but not least, Didier Drogba (Cote d’Ivoire).

I still cannot decide which team I want to win, but I will go out on a limb and say the Netherlands might be crowned the champions, although I have read that the odds are stacked heavily against them!

The problem is that Spain shares group B with the Netherlands. (This Editor’s Desk was written last Friday when the Ridge Times was sent to the printers because Monday was a holiday. The results of the clash between these two teams were thus not yet known to me.)
