Zimeleni moves to new building

eMbalenhle centre needs permanent stands.

eMBALENHLE – About 15 elderly people between the ages of 60 and 90 from the Zimeleni Service Centre now meet at the National Bethesda Apostolic Church in Extension 15.

They meet during the week to exercise and do handcraft, singing, gardening and Bible study.

They are also provided with breakfast, morning tea and a healthy lunch.

The organisation was established in 2012 to keep the elderly active and members used to meet at an RDP house in Extension 15.

They stopped their meetings for a few months until the church allowed them to use the church.

Zimeleni is among the several non-profit organisations that do not have a permanent place to meet.

The Echo of 23 May, “No donation of stands for community centres”, reported about community organisations requesting the Govan Mbeki Municipality to donate stands.

They were told that stands are put on tender in terms of the municipal land alienation policy in order to be fair when stands are allocated.

A tender notice is advertised in all local newspapers, on council notice boards, as well as the municipality’s website when stands become available.
