Girl burns after stove explodes

Awande was in hospital for six months and three weeks.

Awande Sisya (12) was badly burnt by a paraffin stove last year and her mother, Ms Fikelephi Mavimbela, asked the community for help to pay off medical bills.

In an article published by the Standerton Advertiser on 4 October, it was reported that Awande wanted to surprise her aunt when she lit the stove to boil water to wash the dishes.

The aunt was out to the shops and the child was left with her brothers.

The stove exploded when she lit it and her clothes caught fire.

She ran outside screaming and the neighbours and her brothers helped to extinguish the fire.

An ambulance was called and she was rushed to the Standerton Hospital where she was transferred to Garden City Medi-Clinic in Johannesburg.

Her aunt said the child was visiting her when the incident occurred.

Awande was in hospital for six months and three weeks.

According to her mother she has not been the same since the event.

“She has not been well and has trouble sleeping because of nightmares.

“She has to undergo therapy to help her come to terms with what happened.“

Ms Mavimbela said the child’s wounds have not healed and she still has to to go to different doctors for treatment.

“I cannot afford to pay the bills because my medical aid does not cover all the costs.”

People who want to help, can contact her at 082 477 8552.
