Fruit for lunch leads to fruitful arrest by a Delmas cop

In what can only be described as alertness by a police officer, led to the arrest of an alleged drug smuggler in Delmas.

According to a media statement released on August 30, by the station commander of Delmas Police, Col Sipho Sithole, a member of the Delmas Crime Investigation Service walked to Shoprite in Sarel Cilliers Street in Delmas to buy some fruit for lunch when he noticed a Nigerian man.

The officer walked towards the Nigerian to greet him, as he was familiar to the police officer because of previous arrests.

“The Nigerian then apparently began to act strangely, whereupon the member requested to search him,” Col Sithole said.

At this stage, the accused turned around and began running away.

After a chase on foot, the policeman, with the help of a member of the Delmas Community Policing Forum (CPF) managed to catch up with him.

According to Col Sithole, the police officer made a positive discovery upon searching the suspect.

Hidden inside the underpants of the accused, six small plastic bags were found.

The plastic bags contained various types of drugs. These included two mandrax tablets, two ecstasy tablets, three crack cocaine rocks, two zip-lock bags containing dagga, six zip-lock bags containing crystal meth, 17 small ziplock bags containing brown CAT, 15 big zip-lock bags containing CAT and another seven big plastic bags, also containing CAT.

Drugs with a street value of R40 140 were seized and booked into the SAP13.

At the time of going to print, the suspect was due to appear in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, August 31.
