Senior citizens compete in the Golden Games in Secunda

The programme aims to enhance the quality of life and improve the health of older persons by engaging them in activities which promote optimal levels of social, physical, mental and emotional well-being to prevent or delay the onset of ageing and to keep old age-related illness at bay.

The Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation and Social Development and the Govan Mbeki Municipality held the Golden Games for the elderly at the Lillian Ngoyi Stadium (Secunda) on Friday, August 5.

The games were held to select the teams that will compete in the coming district, provincial and national games.

The elderly teams were competing in different sporting codes like jukskei, ring a stick, athletics, soccer, duck walk, brisk walk, passing the ball, pass and kick, relay, goal shooting and pegging washing pegs.

The 11 old-aged centres around the municipality will know by this coming Thursday which teams were selected to play in Gert Sibande District’s Golden Ggames that will be held in Ermelo next month.
