Teen from Bethal represents South Africa in wrestling

When he returns from Mauritius, he needs to prepare for a tournament in Tunisia.

Phumulani Maphumulo (17) from Bethal is among 10 wrestlers from South Africa to compete in the African Continental Championships in Tunisia in May.

Phumulani is a reigning South African champion in the Greco-Roman style in his age group after he won the gold medal at the South African Championship in 2021 and 2022.

He is currently in Mauritius, where he and two female wrestlers are representing the country at the Regional Education and Development Tournament (REDT) Second Edition.

The South African Wrestling Federation (SAWF) paid all three wrestlers’ travel costs.

Phumulani recently qualified to compete at the 2023 African Continental Championships in Tunisia, under the auspices of the United World Wrestling.

When he returns from Mauritius, he needs to prepare for Tunisia.

This tournament will take place in Tunisia from May 15 to 25. Phumulani, despite working hard to qualify, is facing financial challenges.

According to his father, Jeremiah Maphumulo, his son’s estimated travel costs to the championship in Tunisia are R50 000.

The family appeals to the community to assist them in making Phumulani’s dream come true. Anyone who wants to help can contact Jeremiah Maphumulo on 082 366 0256.
