Storm Ladies FC scoops up pre-season tournament trophy in Kinross

Storm Women’s Football Club from eMbalenhle won the Gert Sibande South African Football Association women soccer pre-season tournament held on Saturday, March 12 at Kinross Sasol Club.

Storm Women FC began by winning the semi-finals with 10-0 goals against United Women FC from Standerton before it beat Sasol Thistle Grove with 4-1 goals in final game of the tournament.

The Thistle Grove Women’s FC came second while Rising Stars took third place after winning by 1-0 against United Women FC.

Other teams who participated in the tournament are Zone Mavo FC and Royal Knights FC who both lost in the quarter finals.

The tournament was supposed to be an eight team women‘s tournament but only seven teams participated because the Home Ladies FC didn’t show up to the tournament.

SAFA said the women’s football pre-season tournament is for those clubs that will be participating in the 2022 women’s regional league.

Storm Women’s FC won a trophy, soccer kits and gold medals. Thistle Grove Women FC won soccer kits and silver medals ,while the Rising Stars received soccer kits and bronze medals.

The tournament hosts included the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation in Gert Sibande Region and the Govan Mbeki municipality.

“Our pre-season tournament prepare the ladies teams to be ready for the league as it will resume in the coming weeks.

By organising this particular tournament, it assist us as the association to see and evaluate the state of readiness within our ladies clubs to compete provincial, regional and national,” said Ms Nomvula Mathebula, Gert Sibande regional SAFA official.

Mr Sabelo Lukhele, department of culture sports and recreation coordinator in Govan Mbeki Municipality said the tournament aim is to promote women football and said the department also support and promote growth in woman’s football.
