Wrestlers from the Sasol Wrestling Club did exceptionally well in the SA Wrestling Championship that was held in Pretoria in October.
Sasol wrestlers who excelled and claimed a gold medal in their age and style categories, are Brussow Francke (U/9 -Freestyle), Tiaan Carelse (Presidential Freestyle and U/15 Freestyle), Nico van den Berg (Senior Freestyle) and Zak Manaia (President Schools – Freestyle).
A bronze medal was also awarded to Nico van den Berg in the Senior Greco-Roman category.
The president of the Sasol Wrestling Club, Mr Johan van den Berg said he is extremely proud of the wrestlers’ achievements, especially with the Covid-19 restrictions and restricted practice sessions that make these results even more special.
He also thanked the coaches for all the prepping of athletes during the restrictions and leading the team to a victorious win.
Sasol Wrestling Club also thanked several administrative members for their involvement during the SA Championship. They are Ms Elma Webb (team manager), Ms Irene Schutte (admin), Mr
Johan van den Berg (coach), Mr Arrie Schoeman (coach), Mr Nico van den Berg (referee) and Mr Gerrit Oelofse (referee).
Nico van den Berg has also been selected to join the SA Senior Freestyle team that will take part in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in Pretoria on December 5.
The Commonwealth Wrestling Championship will see athletes from across the world compete.
Van den Berg has also been selected through the SA Wrestling Federation to take part in the International Wrestling Federation’s coaches course that will also happen in December.
