Bowlers take to Secunda bowling green

Despite a slight drizzle on Saturday morning, ardent players took to the bowling greens at the Sasol Club.

SECUNDA – Secunda Bowls Club is boasting with two Mpumalanga West champions.

Lanie Nel won the men’s open single championship that was hosted in Ermelo on 8 and 9 May, while Koos Jonker snatched the veterans’ title at the tournament held in Secunda on the same dates.

Jimmy Holloway ended in seventh place at the open champs in Ermelo.

Betsie Bornman held Secunda’s name high at the women’s single championship also played at Ermelo.

She finished third with her teammate, Elmarie Welbach in fifth position.

It was at the veterans’ event where Secunda really flexed their muscles.

They played on their home turf.

Jonker won the the men’s singles, with his teammates Phil Dawes in third place and Lappies Labuschagne in fourth place.
Gavin Shoobart from Witbank was second.

Ralie van der Spuy from Witbank is the women’s veteran champion, followed by Louise Pretorius of Bethal in second place, Elaine Joubert of Groblersdal in third place and Rina Gibhardt of Secunda in fourth place.

The winners in the Mpumalanga West Championships will face players from the Lowveld in the Mpumalanga Championship on 22 and 23 May.
