Covid-19: Locals show how they are staying fit during lockdown

Cyclists from the Megchem and Sasol Cycling clubs, as well as pensioners and stay-at-home wives share how they manage to stay fit during the lock-down.

SECUNDA- Staying fit while confined to your own yard is not an easy task, but it is manageable.

Cyclists from the Megchem and Sasol cycling clubs, as well as pensioners and stay-at-home wives shared how they manage to stay fit during the lockdown.

Some people planned ahead and went to sport stores to buy weights for exercising at home.

“I follow a program and try to cycle on a smart trainer using either Zwift or RTG Cycling twice a week,” said Mr Piet Prinsloo.

Pieter Prinsloo rides on his bicycle, connected to a turbo trainer and the Zwift program to ride with other people online.

“I also run different distances and on various intensity settings on the treadmill twice a week. Doing indoor rowing and strength training is another exercise my wife and I do.

We also walk around the house for a total distance of one kilometer,” said Mr Prinsloo.

Zwift is a turbo trainer game that enables you to link you turbo trainer up your computer, iPad, iPhone or Apple TV, letting you ride with other cyclists in a virtual environment, therefore helping to alleviate some of the boredom associated with indoor riding. It also allows you to compete against other cyclists around the world using the same program.

The most obvious thing you need to use with Zwift, is a turbo trainer.

If you want immersive game-play and are going to be using Zwift regularly, and can afford it, then a smart turbo trainer such as the Wahoo Kickr or Tacx Neo Smart could be a good option.

These turbo trainers generally have a direct drive design, with a built in power meter and variable resistance. The variable resistance on these turbos will also allow you to feel as if you’re actually riding in the online world, so when you are going uphill on-screen the resistance will increase, and when you are going downhill it will decrease.

Ms Adri Prinsloo and her husband Mr Alwyn Prinsloo, jogs around their home, getting in 140 meters per lap, so they just keep on going to reach a certain distance.

Johan Kruger (father) and Petri Kruger (son) run laps around the house to stay fit during the lockdown.

“The most we’ve gotten is four kilometers” said Adri.

JD Jordaan is currently painting the roof of his house, keeping himself fit by painting and climbing up and down the ladder many times per day.

“I walked for a distance of 5.5 km in the garden, but it was not easy. I would much rather cycle for 100km. It was boring as hell. Running 21km was easier.” said Ian Prinsloo.

Olgierd Puna does a weight lifting exercise to stay in shape during the lockdown.
