Martin deftly climbs success ladder

Martin usually changes his eating habits eight weeks before the time, concentrating on fibre and protein.

Martin Vilakazi of Standerton has no intention of anyone or anything interfering with his fitness regime.

After completing the Comrades Marathon in his personal best time of 7:49,57 this year, he could proudly display the Bill Rowan medal.

This Cluster Fleet Head at the Standerton Police, began with long-distance running in 1998, recollecting the exact year South Africa travelled to France for the Fifa World Cup.

Martin spent five weeks at a training camp with high altitude conditions in Dullstroom and then at a camp in Lesotho as preparation for the Pietermaritzburg to Durban distance.

He was aiming at a silver medal and everything went well till the last 30km, when his sugar level dropped and fatigue set in, with only 15km to go.

“You only keep thinking about moving forward, regardless of any pain.”

Martin managed to slash 10 minutes off his time as compared to last year.
