Panda’s hosts SA pool champs

The total prize money shared among the winners was R21 000

SECUNDA – The best of the South African pool world flocked to Secunda last week to take part in the South African Pool Championship at Panda’s Club at Lake Umuzi.

The tournament began with the women’s nine ball championsship on 12 April. This was won by the reigning champion, Nicola Rossouw, from Gauteng who can now boast with her sixth nine ball title.

Annina du Toit, also from Gauteng, came second and Apsra Panchoo from KwaZulu-Natal third.

Mpumalanga’s best player was Sylvia Pieterse from Gringo’s Club in Hendrina who came fifth.

The 10 ball championship for the men was played on 13 April, with Aiden Joseph from Gauteng taking the first place.

Jason Theron from KwaZulu-Natal came second. He also played in the finals last year.

Secunda’s Jacobus le Roux came third in this discipline. He is a member of Panda’s.

Charles Walhstrandt from Full Moon, Ermelo, came fourth and the fifth place was shared by Hendry Erasmus from Panda’s, Darren Barnard from Panda’s and Orlando Pestana from Gringo’s Hendrina.

Altogether 35 players participated.

The top cue sport player in the country, David Anderson, from KwaZulu-Natal was the winner of the 9 Ball championship played on 14 April. This was the fifth time that he had won this title. Anderson will now take part in the All Africa Championship in Egypt in August and in the World Championship in Quatar in December.

Aiden Joseph was second and Vincent Halliday from Gauteng third.

Hendry Erasmus was Mpumalanga’s best player in fifth place.

On the last day of the tournament, 15 April, Jason Theron took the title for the second time. He will be competing in the World Championship in China in August.

Francois Ellis from Gauteng was second and Zbynek Vaic came third.

Charles Walhstrandt came fourth and Hendry Erasmus and Darren Barnard fifth.

Erasmus is the chairman of Panda’s and Mpumalanga Cue Sport. He thanked Lake Umuzi for the venue and Vodacon Streaming and 360 TV for the live broadcasting of the event.

The next major event on the cue sport calendar at Panda’s is the R100 000 prize invitational tournament, as well as the first ever Chinese eight ball team championship.
