GS netball league heats up in penultimate round

Teams from across the district gathered at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium netball courts to do battle in order to be crowned Gert Sibande District champions.

The penultimate round of the Gert Sibande Netball League took place on Saturday at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium.

Teams from across the district gathered at the netball courts to battle it out in order to be crowned Gert Sibande champions next week, so they will represent Gert Sibande District in the Club Championships set to place later in the year.

All teams brought their A-game, as there were thrills, spills and battle wounds on show.

The play of the day has to go to the Blondies team goal attack, Portia Phiri, who scored a goal outside the goal circle.

With just one round of games left to play, it was a do-or-die situation in most matches.

Kinross still top the log standings in the A-League with Secunda’s Juventus following closely behind and Ermelo’s Thundergirls rounding up the the top three spots.

New Denmark Milan top the B-league with the same points as Ermelo’s Thundergirls, but the teams are separated by goal difference. Secunda’s Juventus takes the third spot, but they are looking over their shoulder as they inch out the Blondies, who are in fourth place, by a single point.

The men’s league sees Juventus top the leaderboard with the Thunderboys following closely behind. State’s Finest round off the top three.

The teams will meet up again on the weekend in the last round, at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium, where the crowning of the top three in all leagues will take place.
