"It's high time that we started competing and getting good positions in these national games.

Dumisani Msibi and Glenrose Xaba were recently announced sportsman and sportswoman of the year at the Regional Sports Awards hosted at the Gert Sibande District Mayoral Parlour in Ermelo.

Dumisani Msibi represented the Gert Sibande Football Association and Safa Mpumalanga in various competitions. In 2014, he was signed by Supersport United FC, currently in the Absa Premier Soccer League.

He represented his side in the Metropolitan U/19 Bayhill Cup where he was selected for the U/20 national team that went on to win the Cosafa U/20 tournament. He participated in the CAF U/20 qualifying games and the CAF championships.

He was later selected for the Bafana Bafana national team during the AFCON qualifying games where he was a third-choice goalkeeper and was also part of the team at the 2014 Mandela Cup played in Mbombela Stadium where he got his first cap.

He is currently Supersport third-choice goal keeper in the Absa Premier League.

In 2013, Glenrose Xaba earned national colours for the Southern Region and took part in the World Championships, received two gold medals for the 3 000m and 1500m during the Mpumalanga Championships where she posted a record time of 10:15 in the 3 000m.

She achieved more gold medals in the SA Cross Country Championship U/19 and Mpumalanga Cross Country Championship.

In 2014, Athletics South Africa invited her to trial for the senior cross country competition where she won gold. She was selected to represent the country in the African Cross Country Competition in Uganda, but could not make the trip.

She also achieved gold in the U/23 SA Championship, two gold medals at the Mpumalanga Championships 5 000m and 1500m and she obtained fifth position at the South African Cross Country Championship.

Meanwhile, the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation handed out R2 million worth of sports equipment to different federations and sports teams in the region. General Manager for Sport and Recreation Mr Lebona Mosia encouraged the recipients to go out and make a difference in the athletes’ lives. “With this sporting equipment, we are hoping to see change in the different communities you live in and we will make it our business to visit your teams to see if the equipment is in use,”said Mr Mosia.

First Deputy President of Mpumalanga Sport Confederation Ms Virginia Raseroka said they are not impressed with Mpumalanga in the national games as it always comes last, yet the department is pumping loads of money into improving their position.

“It’s high time that we started competing and getting good positions in these national games, because we invest a lot of money in the sporting codes and making sure we get all the necessary help we can get,”said Ms Raseroka.
