Cricket teams back in business

With the disappointment in the Cricket World Cup something of the past, it was time for the beginning of the Standerton Cricket Business League on 6 June.

New Denmark and the Secunda Youngsters kicked off the 2015 season at 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

New Denmark batted first and posted 122/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Wynand Grobler hit an unbeaten 55 runs for the New Denmark team.

The Secunda Youngsters wrapped up the match in the 16th over after losing only five wickets with Vernon Pienaar making 35 runs.

In the second and final match of the weekend at 10am on 7 June the Vipers and Northmec went head to head.

The Vipers carried on where they left off last year as winners of the league and won the match with one wicket and four balls to spare.

Northmec batted first and after a wicket of the second ball, it did not look good for the Northmec team.

However a 100-run stand between Douglas Richardson (54) and Jannie Griesel (53) put some respectability on the board and they ended up making 128/2 in 20 overs.

The Vipers struggled and lost wickets frequently, but managed to score the needed runs in the the last over.

A few rules to look out for this season are that a batsmen must retire once he reaches 50 runs, but may return if all the wickets have fallen.

There is a 10m run-up restriction for all bowlers.

Each team has been allotted certain matches to officiate in and failing to do so, will result in a 30 point penalty.

Points will be allocated as follows: eight for a win, one for a lose, four for a draw and in the case of a rain-out each team will receive two points each.

Teams also receive one point for every 20 runs scored in an innings and one point for every wicket taken.

The next round of matches will take place on 14 June.

The first match of the weekend begins at 8am where the Young Guns will compete against the Vipers.

The Dekalb Rugby team will take on The Old Boys at 11am and the last match of the weekend is between Northmec and New Denmark at 2pm.
