Athletes enjoy second park run

Organisers encourage people to take part in action.

SECUNDA – Organisers already hosted the second park run in town on Saturday, 1 November.

They officially launched the first one on Saturday, 25 October with a visit from the Comrades Marathon legend Bruce Fordyce, who also took part in the park run and ran the 5km with the other athletes.

Altogether 100 athletes took part in the first one and 104 in the second one.

Organisers are hoping to increase that number.

250 athletes are registered for Parkrun Secunda.

The park run is an initiative worldwide that takes part in many countries weekly.

It is something the whole family can take part in every Saturday at 8am.

People can take their dogs and push a pram and walk the 5km.

It begins at the Trichardtspruit Dam in PDP Kruger Street.

It is free of charge and those interested can register

online at www.parkrun.co.za/secunda.

Once runners have registered, they can print out their unique

barcodes and their numbers will then be scanned at the end of every park run.

The park run began in 2004 in Teddington in the United Kingdom with

just 13 runners and was brought to South Africa by Fordyce.

He is also the country manager for park runs in South Africa.
