A novice canoeist from Ermelo has scored a hat trick in the first three races in the canoe river race season.
Conrad Beukes managed to win all three these races.
The three initial beginner races covered shorter distances and easier rapids to ease the learners into their new adventure.
Watuni on the North West Campus of Vanderbijlpark organised the first beginners’ race, while Florida Lake Canoe Club in Roodepoort hosted the second novice race and Victoria Lake Canoe Club in Germiston the third.
Conrad, who is a new young paddler on the scene, is studying at the North West University Campus in Potchefstroom where he is training with their onsite canoe club and has shown exceptionally good river race ability.
Learners have to complete a river proficiency test before participating in races on the rivers, and then complete a minimum of six river races to obtain A-grade river status in order to participate at major national events such as the Fish River or Dusi Marathon.
