Sakhile Stadium opens

The sports community and the sports council have been waiting for the stadium to open after the renovations were completed last year. People have been concerned, especially the management of the leagues, since their soccer fields are not in good conditions to host important matches.

SAKHILE – The Lekwa Muncipality formally handed over the Sakhile Stadium to the community on 16 April.

The sports community and the sports council have waited for the stadium to open after the renovations were completed last year.

People were concerned, especially the management of the leagues, since their soccer fields were not in a good condition for important matches.

The council said they did not receive a formal invitation about the handover.

According to Mr Pheello Khena, treasurer of the sports council, they wanted the lease agreement from the municipality to be given to Lekwa Football Association (LFA), but the municipality failed to do so.

They were supposed to meet with the municipality last week, but the meeting, where the use of the stadium would have been discussed, was postponed.

“We have given a planned programme to the municipality on how the stadium will be used, ” Mr Khena said.

The management of LFA was disappointed to learn that the handover was last week because they were also not formally invited to the handover.

According to Mr Novemba Hadebe, chairman: LFA, the stadium should have been handed over to the relevant people who will regulate its use.

“It would have been nice if the stadium could be handed over to the association so we can be responsible for its use and to ensure that matches don’t clash,” Mr Novemba said.

Mr Novemba and the association were happy however that the stadium was handed over.

“We heard that the stadium will be formally handed over, but were not formally invited,” Mr David Ngwenya, sports organiser of the Industrial League, said.

They also agreed that the stadium should have been handed over to the relevant people who will regulate the programmes to ensure that teams do not clash when they want to use the stadium.
