Bill consumers in time, please

But where is the municipal account? Late again? Or completely absent?

Disgruntled consumer, Ermelo:

The end of the month has come and I am sure most responsible recipients of municipal services have worked out their budgets for the coming weeks.

The butcher, the baker and the candlestick-maker have sent their accounts to their debtors and have, hopefully, already been paid.

But where is the municipal account? Late again? Or completely absent?

Come the middle of the month and our purses are thin when – surprise, surprise! – the long-awaited account arrives or the dutiful consumer phones the municipality to find out what is owed.

I phone no other service provider to find out what I owe, but am forced to get the municipality on the line if I want my electricity to stay on.

Is this how our municipality does its business? If it were a private concern, it would be bankrupt by now.
