Ethical leadership needed

Effective leadership rests on three necessary conditions, firstly, technical competence, secondly, strategic leadership and lastly, sound ethical judgement.

Andile Sibanyoni, Ermelo:

Watching a symbol of black excellence reduced to a rag doll at the hands of politicians is a painful sight. It provides an excellent case study for all professionals on why ethical behaviour is necessary and an essential requirement for effective leadership.

The disgraceful end of a successful career underscores the dictum that “what you know will get you noticed, who you know will get you to the top and who you are will keep you there.” Effective leadership rests on three necessary conditions.

Firstly, technical competence, secondly, strategic leadership and lastly, sound ethical judgement.

The first two will get you noticed and the licence to lead. However, character and ethical judgement will give you the right to keep leading.

Technical ability and strategic management can always be delegated; ethical leadership, however, begins and ends with the primary accounting officer.

Remember the buck stops with you.
