Water levels in Mpumalanga have stabilised despite most dams in Gert Sibande District recording declines.
The Department of Water and Sanitation’s weekly state of reservoirs report states that up to January 27, the average dam levels in Mpumalanga have held steady at 94.9%.
Mixed results were recorded across the Gert Sibande District, with the district average declining from 97.8% to 97.5%.
Listed dams that reported improvements in water levels include Nooitgedacht from 99.0% to 101.5% and Westoe from 89.3% to 91.6%.
Grootdraai Dam recorded a decline in water levels, from 103.8% to 102.5%.
Vygeboom Dam’s level dropped from 101.1% to 100.3%.
Jericho Dam declined from 80.4% to 80.2%.
Morgenstond Dam and Heyshope Dam recorded declines from 75.9% to 75.3% and 100.7% to 100.5% respectively.
“The DWS continues to call on citizens of Mpumalanga to use water sparingly, despite current stable water levels,” said Brian Khoza of the DWS.
The DWS highlights the importance of water conservation and urges the community to make every drop count as South Africa is one of the 30 driest countries in the world.
