Grootdraai Dam stands at 97.1%

Gert Sibande is the only district that recorded improvements, increasing from 96.9% to 97.1%, while Ehlanzeni and Nkangala recorded declines, dropping from 100.0% to 99.7% and 98.9% to 98.6% respectively.

Water levels at Grootdraai Dam in the Integrated Vaal River System in Standerton, Mpumalanga continue to rise after successive weeks of improvements.

According to the reservoir report of April 22 from the Department of Water and Sanitation, levels at Grootdraai Dam in the Gert Sibande District stand at 97.1% after last week’s 96.7%.

The other listed dams in the district recorded mixed results, ranging from some improvements to declines in water levels.

Only the Nooitgedacht Dam remained unchanged at 96.9%.

Joining Grootdraai Dam on the upscale includes Westoe from 70.0% to 70.5% and Heyshope from 102.7% to 103.0%.

Listed dams that recorded declines include Vygeboom dropping from 100.8% to 100.6%, Jericho from 69.8% to 69.5%, and Morgenstond from 100.7% to 100.5%.

Mpumalanga provincial water levels recorded unchanged dam levels at 98.2%, slightly lower than the 98.6% during the same period last year.

Water levels in the water management areas are also lower than last year, with the Olifants dropping from 87.5% to 87.2%, which is lower than last year’s 89.6% and Inkomati-Usuthu remaining unchanged at 98.4%, which is also lower than the 99.5% recorded during the same period last year.

Gert Sibande is the only district that recorded some improvements, increasing from 96.9% to 97.1%, while Ehlanzeni and Nkangala recorded declines, dropping from 100.0% to 99.7% and 98.9% to 98.6% respectively.

The department called on the public to use the available water wisely and sparingly, taking into consideration the dry winter season.

“South Africa is a dry and water-scarce country where every drop counts,” the department said.
