Bronkhorstspruit SAPS launched school safety awareness campaign

Constable Munyadziwa Cathrine Ramovha, police spokesperson for Bronkhorstspruit, said safety and security in all schools are still being promoted by the SAPS partnership protocol and the Department of Basic Education.

The Bronkhorstspruit police embarked on a school safety awareness campaign on February 9 at Mshuluzane Maisela Primary School in Zithobeni.

Joining them were the Vispol commander, Lieutenant Colonel Sibonisile Mlaba, the crime prevention office and the social crime prevention office.

Constable Munyadziwa Cathrine Ramovha, police spokesperson for Bronkhorstspruit, said safety and security in all schools are still being promoted by the SAPS partnership protocol and the Department of Basic Education.

“We seek to strengthen safe school committees to address crime and violence is the partnership’s main goal and to link local police stations to all schools, educate learners about violence and its effects and develop school-based initiatives to prevent crime in coordination with local authorities in charge of school security.”

As part of a nationwide partnership between the Department of Education and the police, Lieutenant Colonel Mlaba urged the school management team to take part in the School Safety Programme.

“The prevention of crime and violence at schools is a shared responsibility for both the police and the community through the school governing body and it will be beneficial if we have learners included in the school safety team.”

Ramovha sensitized learners about topics of discipline, gangsterism, bullying, assault, dangers of substance abuse and dangerous weapons, theft, rape and responsible and safe use of social media platforms.

“The programme and the gesture by the SAPS were welcomed by teachers, learners and the SGB,” said Ramovha.
