Sasol awards top matric achievers at function

Sasol encourages learners to take STEM subjects at school.

The annual Sasol Grade 12 Merit Awards recognised the top matrics of 2023 for their hard work and matric results. The function was held on February 1 at the Sasol Recreation Club.

These awards aim to recognise, celebrate and reward the top achievers and encourage learners to enrol in subjects like science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In honouring the teachers’ roles, Sasol also recognised the best-performing subject teachers and schools.
Sasol gave out more than 130 awards at the ceremony.

The award for the most improved school went to Mambane Secondary School from Komatipoort. The overall best-performing schools in the Standerton sub-district and the Ehlanzeni region were Komatipoort Academy, Beacon College, Mkolishi Secondary School and Highveld Muslim Combined School.

Gerrit Viljoen, the senior vice president of Sasol’s operations in Secunda, was one of the speakers.

“As a corporate citizen, all our interventions in education are driven by a need to see a meaningful change in society, preparing communities for a sustainable future,” said Viljoen.

Sasol gave full bursaries to nine learners for their outstanding performances and incentives to the top learners with distinctions in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

Sasol spokesperson Nomia Machebe said Saso,l in collaboration with the Department of Education, continues to implement various interventions to support the teaching and learning of technical subjects across SA.

“These subjects play a pivotal role in preparing students for the evolving workforce,” said Machebe.

“Sasol’s collaboration with the Department of Education in implementing education initiatives is informed by a need to ensure learners from all backgrounds have access to equal educational opportunities. Sasol continues to play a significant role in offering educational programmes through its Osizweni Science Centre.

“Bursaries and skills development programmes such as Bridge to Work are also available to those who qualify.”
