Festive holidays: Police stations in Govan Mbeki municipal area experience less crime

Leandra SAPS spokesperson Nontobeko Ngubeni said they believe their campaigns against suicide paid off.

The Leandra SAPS spokesperson, Nontobeko Ngubeni, said crime in their precinct was under control, except for the murder of Betty Malinga (44).

“Malinga was reported as a missing person on Christmas Day and her body was found on January 3 in Ext 9.”
Ngubeni commended the officers for their work.

“An investigation led to the arrest of a suspect at his hiding place in Ext 12. He was charged with murder and rape and is still in custody.”

Ngubeni said some of the crimes the police dealt with over the festive season, such as assault, emanated from liquor consumption.

Ngubeni believes the police’s fight against suicide campaigns yielded results. There have been no suicides reported since.

The eMbalenhle police spokesperson, Constable Busi Mthethwa, said in comparison to previous years, they did not experience a high crime rate during the December holidays.

Mthethwa said in all murder cases, they were able to arrest suspects, and that meant everything was under control.

“We think we had a low crime rate in the last festive holidays because many people went on vacation, and we also applaud the community for their good behaviour.

“It was not like previous years when we used to have high numbers of murder, rape, assault GBH and uncontrollable liquor outlets. Our police patrolled in all extensions to monitor the situation,” said Mthethwa.

The Evander police spokesperson said they did not experience any serious criminal activities during the festive holidays.
