Volunteers and employees of the Highveld Ridge SPCA worked hard through the festive season.

The volunteers organised a Christmas party for the animals on December 15 and had two playing sessions with them on December 23 and 31.

“Each animal received a new soft toy, soft food and treats before the New Year’s Eve celebrations with fireworks began,” said Stefanie Burr-Dixon, a volunteer and committee member of the Highveld Ridge SPCA.

According to the SPCA’s statistics for December, they had 20 stray dogs, 106 dogs surrendered, 10 dogs adopted, two claimed, one dog died, and they had to put 88 dogs to sleep.

They also had 16 stray cats, 33 felines surrendered, four cats adopted, five died, and they had to put 28 cats to sleep.

By the first week in January, they already had to take in 24 animals.

Anybody who wants to support the SPCA can call them on 082 869 2350.
