City of Tshwane launches Bronkhorstbaai water treatment plant

A new water plant was recently opened in Bronkhorstbaai and had a positive impact on employment.

The City of Tshwane recently announced the launch of the Bronkhorstbaai water treatment plant. This water treatment plant marks the culmination of extensive planning, engineering, and collaborative efforts to enhance water infrastructure in the region.

The project has addressed the need to improve water quality by increasing the capacity from 120kl to 1 500kl.

The existing plant, having reached the end of its life cycle, necessitated the installation of a new treatment plant (package plant), a new abstraction point, a pump house, a 1 500kl clear water tank, a new 1 500kl reservoir at Bronkhorstbaai low level, and the installation of a bulk pipeline with chambers.

The project had a positive impact on employment and local businesses. They appointed 22 EPWP beneficiaries, comprising five men, five women, 10 young men and two young women.

Seven SMMEs were engaged, resulting in a local expenditure of R7.9m. MMC Themba Fosi said, “I am thrilled to announce a unique opportunity for young graduates to gain exposure and hands-on experience at the Bronkhorstbaai Water Treatment Plant.”

“As part of our commitment to fostering local talent and contributing to community development, we are initiating a programme that invites young professionals to work closely with the plant manager to understand and contribute to the plant’s daily operations.”

According to Fosi, this initiative aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, empowering the youth with crucial skills for the sustainable management of water treatment facilities.

Fosi mentioned the second phase of this initiative will extend to the Nkangala area, reinforcing the commitment to comprehensive water management and community empowerment.
