MEC takes action over comatose mom from Bethal

Kalake’s aunt, Sesi Mahlangu, told Ridge Times they are pleased that something is happening, though they still want to know how and why Kalake sustained brain damage while giving birth.

Princess Kalake (20), who has been fighting for her life since giving birth in Bethal Hospital in April, was transferred to Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit on December 1.

Kalake was transferred after the Mpumalanga Health Department MEC, Sesekane Manzini, visited the family this month.

Manzini appealed to the family to work together to help Kalake with her condition. The committee will also investigate what happened to her.

Manzini also promised the family that Kalake would be transferred to Steve Biko Hospital, but they were later told there were no beds available.

Kalake’s aunt, Sesi Mahlangu, told Ridge Times the family is pleased that something is happening, though they still want to know how and why Kalake sustained brain damage while giving birth.

By the time the family could get information about the delivery, they had already transferred Kalake to Ermelo Hospital.

Mahlangu was handed Kalake’s baby boy and told Kalake’s head was swelling. Mahlangu said the Mayisela family wants the hospital management to explain what happened to their daughter.

“Finally, something good happened as the MEC promised, and we will wait to see if our daughter gets help. We sent a family member with her to Nelspruit,” said Mahlangu.
