Entities spotlight mental health

Access to mental health care is crucial to help individuals receive the support required to address their illnesses.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health commemorated World Mental Health Day at Joseph Nhlane Community Hall in eMzinoni on October 30.

Representatives from local and district municipalities, the Mental Health Review Board and the Bethal Hospital board accompanied Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini.

The purpose was to create awareness about mental health illnesses.

According to Manzini, in recent years, there has been an increasing acknowledgment of the vital role mental health plays in achieving global development goals, as illustrated by the inclusion of mental health in sustainable development goals.

People with severe mental health conditions die prematurely – as much as two decades early – due to preventable physical conditions.

Manzini also said despite progress in creating mental awareness, people with mental health conditions often experience severe human rights violations, discrimination, and stigma.

“Many mental health conditions can be treated at our healthcare facilities,” she said.

The MEC said people with symptoms need to be diagnosed by health professionals in state facilities and get treatment.

“The department will continue with campaigns of creating public awareness to increase mental health understanding and reduce stigma. Let us not discriminate against people because of their mental condition,” said Manzini.
